BMX Race Wear FAQ

What is BMX Race Wear and why not just wear jeans?

Race Wear is functional apparel developed specifically for the race track. Unlike jeans or t-shirts, it offers three crucial advantages:

  • Protection: Robust materials (like 600D Polyester) prevent nasty abrasions (road rash) in case of a crash.
  • Mobility: Integrated stretch panels allow you to pedal freely without restriction.
  • Regulation: According to UCI rules and most local tracks, long sleeves and long tear-resistant pants are mandatory for safety.

The Components: Pants vs. Jersey

Race Pants
The most important part of your kit. Constructed from heavy-duty nylon or polyester. They feature pre-curved knees (Rider Attack Position) to fit perfectly while standing on the bike and offer extra room for knee guards. Leather or Kevlar inserts on the inner knees protect against heat and friction from the frame.
Race Jerseys
Made from lightweight, moisture-wicking mesh fabric. They keep you cool during the sprint and dry quickly. The cut is usually longer at the back (Drop Tail) so the jersey stays tucked in while riding.

How should Race Wear fit?

The fit is different from streetwear. It is an "Athletic Fit".

  • Pants: Should sit tight at the hips (often adjustable via ratchets) but offer enough volume at the knees for your Protection. The legs usually taper down to prevent snagging in the chain.
  • Jersey: Should allow free arm movement but flap as little as possible in the wind (aerodynamics).

Maintenance Tips

  • Washing: Wash at 30°C (cold/warm). Turn pants inside out to protect the prints.
  • No Softener: Never use fabric softener! It clogs the pores of the technical fabric and destroys the breathability.
  • Drying: Air dry only. High heat from a tumble dryer can damage the stretch panels and prints.
