Mongoose FAQ
Who or what is Mongoose?
Mongoose Bikes is a legendary BMX brand founded in 1974 by Skip Hess in a garage in Simi Valley, California. The company originally started under the name BMX Products, Inc.
How did it all start?
It all started with a wheel. Skip Hess, a mechanical engineer and automotive wheel designer, developed the MotoMag One—an extremely durable cast-magnesium alloy wheel. He founded BMX Products, Inc. to create these more durable wheels for the emerging sport of BMX. The first Mongoose bike was produced in 1975.
Where does the name "Mongoose" come from?
Hess was inspired by the mongoose, an animal known for its ability to fight venomous snakes. He chose this name for his new bicycles.
How was BMX Products, Inc. (Mongoose) organized?
At its largest stage, BMX Products, Inc. employed about 85 people, according to Hess. In its early years, up to 600 frames per day were produced at its Chatsworth, Los Angeles location. Internally, there was a wholly owned manufacturing division called RECO (Racer Engineering Company), which was formally separated from BMX Products, Inc. for insurance purposes, even though production was always in-house. RECO was headed by Hoppy Brooks.
What does the Mongoose brand stand for?
Mongoose stands for pushing the limits of what a rider can do. From its roots in BMX racing to its expansion into Mountain and Pavement bikes, Mongoose is synonymous with bikes that perform everywhere, from the smoothest singletrack to the biggest drops, and for riders who want to "keep the party going."
What makes Mongoose products special?
The specialty of Mongoose is its deep heritage in BMX culture. They were one of the very first brands to take BMX seriously, building a reputation for durable, performance-oriented bikes. This "built for real riders" ethos continues in their modern BMX, MTB, and Urban bikes, offering durability and performance.
What does Mongoose primarily manufacture?
Mongoose produces a wide range of bicycles, with a strong focus on BMX and Mountain Bikes. Their lineup includes:
- BMX Bikes: Freestyle (Street, Park) and Race.
- Mountain Bikes: Trail, Enduro, and Dirt Jump models.
- Pavement / Urban Bikes: Including "Big Wheel" BMX cruisers.
- Kids Bikes.
Who are Mongoose products suitable for?
Mongoose products are aimed at real riders of all levels. They are a popular choice for beginners and intermediate riders in both BMX and MTB looking for durable, reliable bikes from a brand with an authentic history. They also offer high-end models for professional-level competition.
